ROWVA High School pathway options

Sandburg collaborates with ROWVA High School by providing students the opportunity to complete college courses that connect with career paths. Whether the student is interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree or certificates in career or technical areas, there is a pathway for everyone. 

Students at ROWVA can enroll in classes towards completion of an Associate in Arts Degree. This degree requires completion of 61 credit hours and focuses on completing general education courses that are necessary for bachelor's degrees. Students who are interested in completing an Associate in Science degree should speak with a Sandburg advisor to develop an individual plan.

Associate in Arts degree includes:

  • English 101 and 102 (6 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Public Speaking (3 credit hours)
  • Fine Arts/Humanities (9 credit hours)
  • Social Sciences (9 credit hours)
  • Sciences (7 credit hours)
  • Math (3 credit hours)
  • Human Relations (3 credit hours)
  • Electives (21 credit hours)

To complete an AA degree, students must successfully complete the required 61 credits hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.0.

Pathway to an AA degree

Students taking dual credit courses must meet Sandburg admission standards and complete the steps to enroll.

ROWVA students will take these courses online or at ROWVA depending on instructor availability. Currently, ROWVA students have the following courses offered at the high school as dual credit:

  • ENG 101 - Freshman Composition I
  • ENG 102 - Freshman Composition II
  • SPE 120 - Introduction to Public Speaking
  • SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology

How do these classes transfer?

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a statewide transfer agreement that facilitates transfer among more than 100 participating colleges and universities in Illinois. The IAI General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) includes the following categories:

  • Communication: 3 courses or 9 credit hours
  • Humanities and Fine Arts: 3 courses total, 1 course must be a Humanities course, 1 course must be a Fine Arts course. The additional course is the student’s choice or as directed by the advisor.
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses or 9 credits in total. Courses must be from 3 different subject areas.
  • Mathematics: 1 course (3-5 credit hours)
  • Physical Science and Life Sciences: 2 courses total, 1 course from each area (7-8 credit hours). One of the courses must have a lab.
  • Human Relations: 1 course or 3 credit hours.

Students who are interested in career paths can take classes towards an Associate in Applied Sciences or certificates while in high school. Depending on the availability of qualified faculty, these career degrees or certificates may be offered at ROWVA, online, or on Sandburg's campus. Students may also complete some of the courses at ROWVA, graduate from ROWVA, and then finish the AAS degree or certificate at Sandburg.

These degrees, offered in the career, technical, and health areas, prepare the student for the workforce. They are not intended to transfer to a four-year college or university. For some of our AAS degrees in health care, students must complete a separate application and meet the established requirements for admission.

Students must make payment in full or enroll in the payment plan by the set dates for the semester, typically 4 weeks prior to the start of the term. If payment is not made, students will be dropped from their courses and will need to re-enroll and arrange payment. Students may pay a credit card, check, or cash, through either campus, Carthage or Galesburg. Deferred payment plans are available, please contact our Business Office for further information on payment plans at 309.341.5281. Students may view their balance by logging in to mySandburg, then self-service. 

Dual credit students receive a tuition discount of 50% for the first six credit hours each semester.

Dual credit Success Scholarship

Offered to students who participated in Dual Credit during high school. To be eligible for the scholarship, students are required to complete at least six dual credit hours, complete the FAFSA, have a grade point average at Sandburg of 3.0 or higher, and complete the DC Success Scholarship application. The college selects and awards these students to promote enrollment following high school. Awards are $1,500 for the first year of full-time enrollment following high school graduation.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS PATHWAYS

Students who are interested in health careers can accelerate their enrollment into our selective admissions programs by taking some of the prerequisite courses in high school. Students should meet with a Sandburg academic advisor to discuss admissions requirements and to develop a specific plan to ensure those requirements are met.

COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT

The college learning environment encourages critical thinking and promotes the examination of contrasting perspectives of the world. This is an environment of adult interaction where students will be exposed to concepts, lectures, and materials that are designed for adults and adult audiences.

  • Internet usage: At the college, there is some restricted internet access; however, student internet usage is not monitored.
  • The college environment: Carl Sandburg College is a community of lifelong learners that welcomes, values, and respects diversity. The College fosters a climate of mutual respect that celebrates diversity and inclusion by embracing our similarities as well as our differences. The College stands for tolerance, non-discrimination, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Expected conduct: A copy of the Student Code of Conduct is available on the Sandburg website and all students are expected to behave in adherence to this policy.
  • Course descriptions: Course descriptions for all courses are available through the online catalog. At times, college courses may expose students to graphic depictions or discussions of mature themes.
  • College classroom activities: Classroom activities may include fieldwork, lab experiments with chemicals, career, and technical education courses may include the use of machinery/complex equipment and group work with other students of all ages and backgrounds.

COLLEGE/COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Enrolled students establish a permanent college academic record and transcript that may be required by future colleges or universities. This permanent academic record may affect eligibility for future financial aid. It is also understood that the student will receive college credit for successfully completed coursework. 

  • Students are responsible to go online to obtain their college grades. Grades will not be mailed to the student’s residence.
  • All students are expected to be in compliance with all current published college policies, rules, and regulations. Students are subject to the same course requirements, grading standards, and attendance requirements established by the course instructor in the course syllabus.
  • Students will be treated like everyone else in the class.
  • Students will be held to the same expectations as any other student in the classroom and will be expected to follow the course syllabus.
  • The course content, delivery, and assessments will not be altered due to underage students enrolled in the course. Students may be exposed to adult language, discussion, and/or themes in the classroom, and on campus. 
  • Students are responsible to communicate with the instructor if there are any questions or concerns.
  • Students are responsible to seek assistance for any special needs they have, such as disability services or tutoring.
  • The faculty bear no responsibility for underage students outside of the classroom. Parents/legal guardians are responsible for the students before and after class.
  • Parents/legal guardians assume responsibility and liability for the student and will be expected to attend any disciplinary sessions.

FERPA

  • If a student is attending a postsecondary institution - at any age - the rights under FERPA have transferred to the student. However, in a situation where a student is enrolled in both a high school and a postsecondary institution, the two schools may exchange information on that student. If the student is under 18, the parents still retain the rights under FERPA at the high school and may inspect and review any records sent by the postsecondary institution to the high school.
